PS3 to the movie industry: people actually play games on me

sort of interesting, this article is supposing that the format war might not have been a war in the first place, just a losing battle for both camps.
basically it says that bluray won the format “war” because of bloated bluray player numbers related to the initial sales of the PS3. so no one bought a stupid bluray player, but enough people bought the PS3 to make bluray look like it was winning in sales. in reality though, studios should worry that people might not be buying the PS3 to watch movies, but to play games! duh.
i think this article is being a little too sensitive to what the PS3 is “intended” to do. hell, someone with common sense would realize that having all those PS3s out there with the ability to play bluray disks would increase sales of bluray movies. why wouldn’t it?
say johnnie consumer is in a worst buy somewhere. he’s looking for a copy of the recently released ACTION AWESOME MOVIE 7. johnnie finds AAM7 on the racks, but wait! there are two versions, a super special bluray version and a dvd version. both cost the same, and johnnie bought a PS3 last week so he knows he has a bluray player. why wouldn’t he get the bluray copy?
well i’ll tell you why, its the same reason no one bought dvds when they first came out, cause VHS players were ubiquitous! and dvd was scary and unknown. now dvd players are even more ubiquitous than vhs could have ever dreamed. vhs would shit its pants if it was as popular as the dvd format. so of course its going to take a while for bluray to catch on. if the studios bail on bluray, its dead! so final word? stick with it guys, it’ll catch on. and you made the right choice, hd-dvd wasn’t that great anyway.
